Two stories side by side

[CN: Child abuse, Walk in shoes]

I am hurting and I am angry, but this is important and needs to be said. I invite you to compare the two stories below.

Story 1

A teenager is found chained to a bed
His mother did it
There is a public outcry
Media condemns the mother
The mother is prosecuted
The teenager is supported through the horrific experience

Story 2

A teenager is found chained to a bed
His mother did it
The public calls for compassion
The media emphathises with the mother
There is no prosecution
The teenager is autistic

I am hurting and I am angry. Why are those two stories so different?

Why is it ok to start talking about the nuances of the situation when the child who has been abused is autistic?
Why is it ok to focus on the parent’s shoes and not the child’s?
Why is it ok for the media to seek out sympathetic parents when the child is autistic?
Why is it ok for everyone to talk over autistic people?
Why is any of this ok?

I am hurting and I am angry. None of this is ok.
